Darling Krishna gets his third release of the year on July 28 when Kousalya Supraja Rama hits theatres. The film bears the tagline ‘Tale of a Real Man’ and has been directed by Shashank.
Shashank-Darling Krishna’s first collaboration
Director Shashank came up with the idea of Kousalya Supraja Rama around Women’s Day in 2022 and almost immediately approached Darling Krishna to play the lead in the film. Kousalya Supraja Rama is the last film that Krishna took up after his own directorial, Love Mocktail 2. The actor has been quoted as saying that in his 10-year film career, the script of Kousalya Supraja Rama is the only one that made him go ‘wow’, besides his own directorials, of course. Shashank has also said that the film is his best so far.
Cast of Kousalya Supraja Rama
The film’s primary cast include Darling Krishna, Brinda Acharya, Sudha Belawadi, Rangayana Raghu and Nagabhushana. While a love story is central to the plot, Shashank has said that the film is just as much about the relationship between the protagonist Rama and his mother, Kousalya and that the role is among Sudha’s best to date. Krishna's wife and actress Milana Nagaraj is also in the film in a pivotal role.
Milana's dilemma
The common refrain in film circles is that the Krishna-Milana pairing is being repeated too often, something that they are also taking note of and trying to avoid. And yet, after Love Birds, which had them together, they will be seen together in Kousalya Supraja Rama. This, says Milana, is only because Shashank needed an experienced actress with the right acting prowess, as the character is rather complex.

Story of a Real Man
Kousalya Supraja Rama follows Rama, the son of Siddegowda (Rangayana Raghu), who is instilled with ideas of women being inferior to men by his father. Rama grows up to become an arrogant, self-centred chauvinist, but then circumstances force him to change his world view. How he goes from being his father’s son to becoming a mother’s boy, is what the film is all about.
Arjun Janya weaves his magic
The film is an Arjun Janya musical and so far, four songs have been released in the public domain. The first, Shivani, was a runaway hit and became a popular track for reels with Krishna’s hook step from the song. This was followed by Preethisuve, a melodious romantic number sung by Sonu Nigam. The title track and the recent ‘enne’ song 90 Haaku, have also been well received.
Theatrical release plans
Kousalya Supraja Rama, produced by Shashank along with actor-politician BC Patil, is releasing in theatres on July 28, with a target of about 200 screens in Karnataka. The team is also looking at having a few shows each in Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai, but that is still in the works. The film will release in the US and Canada on August 4.
Digital and satellite partner
The team is yet to announce details of the post-theatrical streaming rights. Darling Krishna’s films often land on Amazon Prime Video, while Shashank’s last film, Love 360, went to Sun NXT, so, it remains to be seen which network will snap up Kousalya Supraja Rama.
