Kottukkaali, the recently released Tamil film starring actors Anna Ben and Soori in the lead roles, is now streaming on Aha Tamil. The critically acclaimed film helmed by PS Vinothraj, was well received and got rave reviews upon its release.

Anna Ben and Soori’s performances

Anna Ben plays an adamant girl Meena, who falls to silence after failing to convince her family that she is in love with a boy from another caste. With not much dialogue in the film, Anna Ben plays extraordinarily well as a resilient woman. At the same time, Soori plays Pandi, a man who is planned to marry Meena, and violently handles her for her actions. Both Soori and Anna Ben’s performances were one of the highlights of the film, which was pointed out and praised by many critics.

Kottukkaali’s interactive storytelling

Kottukkaali’s storytelling is essentially a road drama, which revolves around Meena’s family taking her to a shaman to relieve her of the apparent possession they believe because she fell into silence. The climax of Kottukkaali, which is open-ended invites the audience to choose their ending. PS Vinothraj’s filmmaker style also leaves plenty of room for the audience to interpret the film in their own way.

Just like PS Vinothraj’s first film Koozhangal, his sophomore film Kottukkaali is also a powerful tale that talks about the misogyny and patriarchy prevalent in the society. Kottukkaali empathetically takes the side of women and shows the brutalities imposed on the gender by society and men.

Technical brilliance

Kottukkaali’s making has been excellently elevated by technical brilliance. The film’s technical crew consists of B Sakthivel cranking the camera, who composed long and still shots, aiding the storytelling of the film. Even though the film does not have prominent music, the sound design is handled by Suren G, which captures the mood of the place.

Kottukkaali’s festival recognition

Kottukkaali has earned several recognitions at various international film festivals. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. The film also won the Golden Lynx Award for Best Feature Film at the Portugal International Film Festival.
