Kiran Rao is currently enjoying the success of her critically acclaimed directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies. The project also marks Kiran’s first collaboration with Aamir Khan after their divorce in 2021. During the film promotional events, the former couple shared key insights into their relationship and how they continue to be friends and co-parents of their son Azad. In a recent conversation, Kiran has broken silence on rumors that criticized her for Aamir Khan’s divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta. However, the filmmaker has now clarified that she started dating the Dangal actor much later, during the filming of Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades.
Filmmaker Kiran Rao is basking in the success of her recent satirical drama film, Laapataa Ladies. During a candid conversation, she opened up about the trolling and wrongful accusations when she began dating Aamir Khan. Kiran and Aamir met on the sets of the 2001 film Lagaan, where Aamir was the lead while Kiran worked as the assistant director, or AD.
When Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta separated after 16 years of marriage in 2002, Kiran bore the brunt of hatred and criticism as people blamed her for Aamir’s divorce, as the timeline of Lagaan and divorce nearly had a one-year gap.
However, Rao has clarified that they were not romantically involved during Lagaan; in fact, it was 3–4 years later when they started dating after the reconnection. When Kiran was working for Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades, Kiran revealed that this was the time when love blossomed between Aamir and Kiran.
“Lots of people think that Aamir and I connected on Lagaan, we absolutely didn’t. Aamir and I got together during Swades, he was going to shoot Mangal Pandey at the time. We had just shot a couple of commercials with Ashutosh Gowariker for Coke and that is where Aamir and I reconnected. 3-4 years after Lagaan. I wasn’t in touch with him.”
The Dhobi Ghat director also mentioned that she was involved with someone else during Lagaan and would hardly get a chance to connect with Aamir. “When Aamir and I started going out in 2004, everybody thought that this started when we were shooting for Lagaan and this caused the divorce, which was not the fact,” she added.
Kiran and Aamir’s steady relationship is an ideal example of friendship and strong bonds, even after marital separation. The duo respects each other’s personal and professional lives. This led to their joint venture, Laapataa Ladies, which Kiran directed and Aamir co-produced.
