Laapataa Ladies, a rural satire, is gearing up for its theatrical release on March 1. Ahead of the film’s release, the makers, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan, have been busy engaging in several promotional events. The project marks a collaboration between the former married couple after their 2021 divorce.
It’s been nearly 3 years since they parted ways, but Kiran and Aamir continue to make headlines for their unmatched understanding and positive remarks about each other. Here are 5 revelations made by the former couple during the various promotional events that will make you believe in their strong family bond and friendship.
Kiran Rao on the “Aamir Khan’s Wife” tag
Star couple Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao had a mutual divorce after more than 15 years of togetherness in 2021. The former couple co-parent their son Azad and are still great friends. During a candid interview, Kiran spoke about the challenges of being married to a superstar. She revealed that people would often limit her status to that of Aamir Khan’s wife.
“You are Aamir Khan’s wife, right?’ They might not even know my name, but the association is directly with Aamir, and I have become accustomed to that. Though now I have to say, ex-wife," Kiran said. She clarified that this doesn’t affect her much, as she has her own identity and life.
Aamir Khan on asking for feedback from his ex-wife
Aamir revealed recently that he asked his ex-wife for feedback to reflect on his shortcomings as a husband. “Ek mazedaar cheez hai. Hum logg ka divorce abhi hua hai, aap log ko pata hi hoga. Ek din shaam ko main baitha hua tha, maine bola Kiran, kya lagta hai as a husband mujhme kya kya kami thi" (I'll tell you an amusing thing. We recently got divorced as you all know. One evening I asked Kiran, what do you think I lacked as a husband. What can I improve on going forward), Aamir told ABP news.
Kiran's quirky answer had almost 15-20 points for areas where he could improve. “You talk a lot. You don’t let anyone else talk and keep harping on your own point,” are some of the points laid out by Kiran.
Aamir and Kiran never fought when they were married
Aamir and Kiran are among the rare couples who share a great bond even after being separated. They have been in the news for the love and respect that they have for each other, even after their divorce. When asked about her experience of working with Aamir after getting divorced, Kiran said, “Aamir and I have never really fought; it is very strange. We have our disagreements, but we never have big fights. We have had our share of ups and downs, but never anything that I could term even vaguely antagonistic," Kiran said.
Modern family relationship dynamics
Kiran and Aamir continue to co-parent their son, Azad Rao Khan, and they often face challenging questions about their family relationships. During a conversation with The Week, the Dhobi Ghat director addressed speculations about their unique family dynamics to reflect on their happiness. She also emphasised that the couple had a mutual divorce and that makes all the difference in maintaining good relationships even after parting ways. “There are relationships you shouldn’t lose if you get divorced. Aamir and I didn’t have an acrimonious divorce; we may have parted as a couple, but we are very much a family,” Kiran said.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s understanding beyond marital relationships
Kiran and Aamir have worked on many successful projects, like Lagaan, Secret Superstar, Dangal, and Peepli Live. They make for a great partnership that goes beyond a marital relationship. When asked about their relationship, Kiran shared that they understand and respect each other well, as they have collaborated on several projects and have been supporters of each other. “It came naturally to us because we started off working together, and even after we became partners, we continued working together. We understand each other in a way that goes beyond just the marital relationship,” Kiran told Connect FM Canada.
Laapataa Ladies marks Kiran Rao’s return as a director. Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande serve as co-producers alongside Kiran.
