This Onam brought in the respite that the stakeholders in Kerala's cinemas, courtesy of Duqluer Salmaan's King of Kotha, Nivin Pauly's Ramachandra Boss & Co and RDX, starring Shane Nigam, Neeraj Madhav and Antony Varghese. And not to mention Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer, which had a terrific run in cinemas, emerging as the biggest-ever Tamil hit at the Kerala box office.
King of Kotha faced the challenge of mixed reviews
Duqluer Salmaan's King of Kotha had created quite a hype before its theatrical release. Duqluer also did a wonderful job setting a new benchmark for movie promotions in the Malayalam film industry. He was everywhere talking about the movie and spreading the word about it. Thanks to all his efforts, the movie opened in cinemas amid a lot of fanfare. It was the biggest release in Duqluer's career. If not for the mixed reviews on its opening day, the movie might have also set a new collection record owing to Duqluer's amazing nationwide promotion.
The earning potential of King of Kotha suffered due to mixed reactions and also prompted the filmmakers to claim that there was a targeted attack against the movie. However, the movie braved unfavourable reviews and emerged as one of the Onam winners at the box office.
By the end of its first week in cinemas, King of Kotha has raked in about Rs 35 crore from its worldwide ticket sales. It's not a bad haul considering the mixed reviews. Duqluer's 2021 hit Kurup had earned over Rs 40 crore by the end of its first week, despite the pandemic restrictions.
RDX is the real Onam winner
In the meantime, debutant director Nahas Hidayath's small-budget actioner has sprung by a surprise by becoming the biggest hit this Onam. The movie's release was dwarfed by King of Kotha, Ramachandra Boss & Co and Jailer. It didn't get a big launch like the other two movies. However, powered by good word-of-mouth, things began to look up for the movie.

RDX was released in cinemas a day after King of Kotha. And the end of its first week, the movie has taken in more than Rs 35 crore in global ticket sales. And thanks to the good reviews, the film is showing strong signs of growth in the coming days.
