Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha promises some explosive surprises! To kick it off, it’s none other than Mohanlal, who is reportedly set to launch the trailer of the much-anticipated Onam release, helmed by Abhilash Joshiy.
Earlier this year, this year’s Onam was set to be a clash between Mohanlal and Dulquer’s big-budget action entertainers – Ram and King of Kotha, respectively. With Mohanlal and Jeethu Jose ph’s film still having close to 50 days of shoot remaining, Ram has bowed out of the race, clearing up the festive season – at least to a large section of the audience – for Dulquer’s King of Kotha.
The makers recently revealed that the film’s trailer will be released on August 9. But with Mohanlal launching it, it will also help the industry as a whole with fans of both superstars coming in support of the big-budget film that is expected to revive the fortunes of the industry much like Tovino Thomas and Asif Ali-starrer 2018 : Everyone Is A Hero did in May.

King of Kotha, which marks the debut directorial of Abhilash Joshiy, son of veteran filmmaker Joshiy, is also produced by Dulquer and is his most expensive Malayalam film till date. The movie reportedly recovered a huge chunk of his revenue through its OTT, satellite and overseas rights and is also billed as the film capable of overhauling 2018’s record of being the highest grossing Malayalam film ever with a worldwide box office figure, just shy of Rs 180 crore and an overall business of Rs 200 crore.
King of Kotha, which is scripted by Abhilash N Chandran, is a gangster-actioner that is set in the 1980s and 1990s and also has a bunch of stars including Aishwarya Lekshmi, Chemban Vinod Jose, Prasanna, Gokul Suresh and Shammi Thilakan. It’s also rumoured that another leading actor will play a pivotal cameo in the film. Prithviraj Sukumaran was initially one of the names that did the rounds. The makers are yet to officially confirm if such a role is part of the film.
Meanwhile, King of Kotha is expected to clash with Nivin Pauly’s Ramachandra Boss and Co and Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese and Neeraj Madhav-starrer RDX during Onam.
