The film, produced by KRG Studios, is a gangster tale, but is it an original tale or a remake, wonder netizens, given the actor-filmmaker’s track record

It’s a development that was expected ever since KRG co-founder Karthik Gowda posted a photo of him with Kiccha Sudeep with a caption that read, ‘To new beginnings’. In the last few days, Karthik and the official social media handles of his banner have been teasing an interesting update, which they revealed today to be a collaboration with Sudeep after all. The actor-filmmaker returns to the director’s chair with King Kichcha, a gangster tale that will go on floors in 2024, 10 years after his last directorial, Maanikya came out.
Fans, of course, were mighty thrilled at this announcement, given that for a while it was thought that Sudeep may only be doing a cameo in Naveen Shankar’s KRG film Kirik’et 11. “OMG, Boss back to direction department,” wrote excited fans. “Is he directing himself because only he knows how best to present him?” asked a netizen. A few netizens wondered if King Kichcha would be based on an original script or if it was a remake, given that Sudeep’s track record as a filmmaker includes five remakes and only 1 original film.
Interestingly, during the promotions of Vikrant Rona, when OTTplay had broached the subject of direction, Sudeep had said that he did not feel the need, given that he had a bunch of talented filmmakers waiting in the wings with scripts tailor-made for him. At the time, he had said that a couple of collaborations with Vikrant Rona maker Anup Bhandari were on the cards, but none of that has materialised yet. There have also been rumours about Maanaadu maker Venkat Prabhu directing him, which is again a project that has had no update. And now, Sudeep is set to direct himself.
Given that Kabzaa maker R Chandru has announced a film with Sudeep and that the actor will direct himself so on, there was also a school of thought that perhaps he should have done Billa Ranga Baasha with Anup instead.
