In the days before Kiccha Sudeep officially announced his 46th film, there was a lot of speculation about who he’d choose to collaborate with. A lot of names were discussed, most of who were established names either in Kannada or Tamil cinema. Contrary to all of that speculation, what he went ahead and did was to sign up for a film to be directed by a rank newcomer – Vijay Kartikeyaa - which was being produced by a very popular producer from Kollywood – Kalaippuli S Thanu.

What was it about the film that gave Sudeep the confidence to trust Vijay Kartikeyaa? Speaking to the media in Bengaluru recently, Sudeep joked that he was perhaps in a good mood when he was approached for Max, but then added that his decision to do the film rested squarely on the fact that he liked the story that Vijay Kartikeyaa narrated.

Most importantly, the script was not manipulated, adds Sudeep. “It was an honest narration, with no manipulation to suit my image as a star. There were no added frills to impress me. All that he wrote was what was absolutely necessary for the story – nothing more and nothing less,” he said.

The Kannada superstar also noted that Vijay’s lack of a body of work was never an issue. “He had material that I liked. When someone can narrate a story beautifully, there must be a certain vision and quality to how it will be directed. Even if he were to falter, I was there to help him through it,” said Sudeep, adding that the filmmaker has done a great job with Max, which is releasing in theatres on December 25.

The film has Sudeep as the hot-headed cop Arjun Mahakshay, nicknamed Max, and revolves around events occurring on one night after he resumes charge of his station following a brief suspension. Given the brevity of the subject, the film is just over 2 hours in runtime. Joining Sudeep on the cast are Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Sunil, Pramod Shetty, Ugramm Manju, Samyukta Hornad, Sukrutha Wagle, Kari Subbu and Sudha Belawadi, among others.
