Khalid Rahman, who has helmed interesting films such as Unda and Thallumaala, is gearing up for the release of his next film, Alappuzha Gymkhana, which stars Naslen of Premalu fame in the lead role. As the movie gears up for its release on March 28, 2025, the director spills beans about the plot of the Naslen-starrer, giving a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming sports comedy.
In a recent interview with The Cue Studio, Khalid Rahman said that Naslen-starrer Alappuzha Gymkhana is a light-hearted movie. While admitting that sports movies usually remind people of Rocky, or Sarpatta Parambarai, Khalid said that his upcoming Malayalam film is more about amateur boxing. “There is no blood-shedding action or violent action in it,” he added.
Revealing the plot of Naslen-starrer, Khalid said that the movie, set in Alappuzha, is about a bunch of teenagers who fail the plus two exams.
They want to get into SD College Alappuzha together and realise that competing in state-level sports competitions could get them grace marks. It is also easy to get admission to college via sports quota, said Khalid Rahman, adding that teenagers then zero in on boxing and hence the film follows their journey.
Khalid Rahman previously helmed Mammootty’s Unda and Tovino Thomas-starrer Thallumaala, both of which left an impression among audiences. Unda followed a group of Kerala policemen heading to a Moaist-affected area for election duty, while Thallumaala narrated the story of a youth Wazim in northern Kerala.
Naslen, on the other hand, tasted tremendous success with Premalu, which also starred Mamitha Baiju in the lead role. The Telugu-dubbed version of the romantic-comedy film is available on Aha and OTTPlay Premium. He was also part of Super Sharanya, which was helmed by Premalu director Girish AD. You can watch Super Sharanya on Zee5 and OTTplay Premium. Some of Naslen's other notable performances are in movies such as Home and Jo & Jo.
