Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaaliyan is finally gearing up to go on floors. The movie, which has been in the works for over four years now, is expected to begin shooting by the end of this year and the team has now roped in KGF music director Ravi Basrur as its composer.

Prithviraj made the announcement through his social media page, sharing a pic of Ravi along with the film’s director S Mahesh and producer Rajeev Nair. The big budget period film, which is set in the 1600s, will mark Ravi’s second Malayalam film after Muddy, which released last year.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the film’s director Mahesh had told us that Kaaliyan is conceived as an epic thriller. The movie, which is based on the folktales of Southern Kerala, has Prithviraj playing a warrior and loyal aide of Iravikutti Pillai of the Venad kingdom. “Iravikutti Pillai’s heroics have been hailed in the ballads and Kaaliyan will focus on one particular story that is set against the backdrop of the Venad kingdom,” he said, adding that the film will be a historic fiction.

Four years ago, when the movie’s title poster was launched, the makers had also announced that Sathyaraj will be part of the cast. However, the delay has caused a lot of changes in the film’s cast and also the scale at which the film is mounted. The team had earlier this year held massive auditions across Kerala as well as the neighbouring states to rope in new talents.

The film, which will have extensive VFX, will also take into account “the change in visual language of cinema” that has happened over the past four years, said Mahesh.

Prithviraj, who is currently shooting for Kaapa, is expected to begin work on the movie after he completes Vilayath Buddha and his portions in KGF director Prashanth Neel’s Salaar, which has Prabhas in the lead.
