After reports that Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan, and Ananya Panday's starring film is titled Kesari: Chapter 2, the makers have announced the release date for the film. The film, officially titled Kesari Chapter 2—The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh, is set to hit the big screens on April 18, 2025, that is, Good Friday. Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, the period drama is produced by Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, and Leo Media Collective.
For the uninitiated, the film is based on the life of lawyer C. Sankaran Nair, who, in the 1920s, following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, engaged in a "unprecedented battle" against the British Empire; Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is behind the film.
The original release date for Kesari Chapter 2 was March 14, 2025. The film is adapted from Raghu and Pushpa Palat's The Case That Shook the Empire.
The book's synopsis suggests that the widely reported trial—one of the longest in history—stunned a world that finally recognised some of the horrors being committed by the British in India. The Case That Shook the Empire paints a detailed picture of a complex nationalist whose unwavering belief in his principles allowed it to shed light on the court proceedings that were pivotal in India's fight for independence. This report provides a firsthand account of this historic case.
Supposedly, Akshay would portray the role of lawyer C. Sankaran Nair. However, the makers have not yet revealed details about the roles played by Madhavan and Ananya.
Akshay Kumar co-starred alongside Parineeti Chopra in the 2019 film Kesari for those who were unaware, which eventually became one of the year's highest-grossing films. The actor portrayed the valiant fighter Havildar Ishar Singh during the Saragarhi Battle. Kesari Chapter 2 holds no connection with the historic war drama.
