National Award-winning filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly believes that it is the filmmakers' responsibility to ensure the merit of their films. He said that instead of blaming other factors for failures, one needs to introspect. The director’s Lokkhi Chele was released on August 26 with Ujaan Ganguly in the lead. The director said that if Lokkhi Chele fails to impress the audience, it will be his responsibility.
Talking about the impact of the pandemic on the footfall, Kaushik pointed out that Anik Dutta’s Aparajito and Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s Belashuru have seen massive success despite the fear. “Did people become less health conscious since it was a film made on Satyajit Ray?” He further added that if films don’t run successfully, the makers often blame the weather or IPL. “But in reality, we can film many many superhit films that are released in the time of monsoon or during some tournament. It is not the weather or boycott call but the merit of the film that determines if it can do business or not. As a director, I think it is my responsibility to make a good film. If Lokkhi Chele doesn’t run well, it will be my responsibility. If we, the filmmakers, don’t take responsibility for the failure and introspect then the blame game will continue and nothing will change,” said the filmmaker.
Talking about filmmakers’ responsibility, Kaushik said, “The primary condition is to make a good film. It has to entertain people. A person will pay Rs 250-300 for tickets in multiplexes. As filmmakers, we will have to offer them the content worth the money.” He also said that a director has to have a complete understanding of the film while shooting. “That is not fair on the producers. One has to be prepared and planned. One cannot try and be creative on set,” he said.
