Kareena Kapoor Khan ticked off a new debut this year by making her way to the OTT platform. The actor was seen in the Netflix original film, Jaane Jaan, directed by Sujoy Ghosh. The actor left an impressive mark with her performance in the film, co-starring Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma. During a recent interaction, the actor spoke at length about how it's a great time to be an actor with OTT and theatres and an exciting time for films too.
Exciting times for films in the OTT era
On her OTT experience, Kareena told the Indian Express that she believes this to be an exciting time for films, whether seen online or in cinemas. The actor agreed that everyone seems to be returning to full strength after the post-COVID slump. So, she figured it was a nice opportunity, and the offers were plenty, but Kareena has always liked crime dramas. She was confident that she could persuade audiences and that they would love her performance in Jaane Jaan, and the writing by Sujoy Ghosh was excellent.
Talking about OTT vs. theatres, Kareena shared that, compared to the cinematic experience of going to a theatre, viewing a performance at home provides much clearer visuals. She said that one has some popcorn and is ready for the show to start. Since OTT is a private event, her anxiety levels were through the roof.
Evolution of the film industry since 2000
During the interview, the actor was asked about the changes she observed in the film industry since her debut in 2000. To which she replied that everything about films has evolved since then, in her opinion. More and more people are seeing the films now than ever before. Kareena does think that everyone was watching Satyajit Ray's pictures in the '60s and '70s; the films of her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore were popular; and the films of Raj Kapoor were popular in Russia.
Today, the industry is second only to Hollywood in terms of global prominence. In fact, she would wager that they produce far more films than they do. The South Indian film industry deserves much of the credit for helping Bollywood reach parity in terms of budget. However, Kareena also believes that many performers are finding other opportunities, and a lot of things about films have evolved. Since she was 19 years old, the actor feels like she has matured a lot. She doesn't want to stop feeling excited, though. If she were to lose it, she would probably as well call it quits.
Dynamic of women-led films
When further questioned about her involvement in female-directed films, Kareena stated that she believes the women in these films feed off of one another's energy. It's a different vibe when the co-star is a woman, and she thinks there's a lot more relatability; they also bounce off one another's energies because women are, she thinks, a lot easier. The actor gets the impression that everyone here is relaxed and at ease with one another. Making a film with just women in key roles is easier than ever before.
Kareena added that in this way, administering the shot comes across as more lighthearted and casual. They are not even rivals, and in her experience, male actors tend to have greater competition and ladies don't.
