Karan Johar has been selling dreams and convincing audiences to suspend their disbelief for years. He introduced us to Poo, who ruled the world in a powder pink jacket, and many other interesting, campy characters. Then came a college unlike any other, with its own trilithon to determine the next Student Of The Year. The film evolved into a franchise, with the original movie marking the debut of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra in 2012, followed by a sequel in 2019 featuring Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, and Ananya Panday. However, the latter was not directed by Johar himself.
Student Of The Year 3 To Be A Series
It seems the filmmaker now wants his beloved SOTY franchise to take a big leap. This doesn’t necessarily mean casting bigger stars or changing the plot of the next movie; instead, Karan Johar has transformed the entire format of the IP with Student Of The Year 3. Yes, you read that right. In his latest chat, Karan has confirmed that his much-anticipated threequel to the franchise, Student Of The Year 3, will now be a web series produced by Dharma’s digital wing, with a very interesting filmmaker at the helm of it.
It Won’t Be Karan Johar’s Voice
Karan Johar, speaking at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF) in Chandigarh (via Hindustan Times), discussed working with an interesting set of directors. He confirmed that Reema Maya, known for Nocturnal Burger, will be directing the much-anticipated Student Of The Year 3, which will now be a web series. The filmmaker confirmed that the threequel will reflect Reema’s voice and not Karan’s, indicating a departure from the franchise's usual style.

“Reema Maya will be directing the digital version of Student of the Year. But it will be in her own style and definitely not mine because if I were to influence Reema Maya’s work, I would make it more of an illusion, which is what her name means. I just wanted it to be her voice. She made it her own series,” Karan Johar said.
Shanaya Kapoor Still The Lead?
It was previously rumored that Student Of The Year 3 would feature Shanaya Kapoor in the lead role, but no further updates were provided. She may still be part of the show and could make her debut on streaming rather than on the big screen.
