In the past several days, ever since Rishab Shetty’s Kantara came out and took the box office by storm, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has often taken to social media to appreciate the cinematic genius of the Hombale Films production.

“Just when all Filmwallas came to the conclusion that only SUPER STARS, MASSIVE PRODUCTION VALUES and SPECTACULAR VFX can bring people to theatres , a small tiny film with no names #Kantara is breaking all the records of the BIGGIES,” he wrote yesterday.

That was not enough, it seems, as he then went on to share the actor-filmmaker’s interview during his Mumbai promotions, adding, “Rishab Shetty proves that GREAT FILMS like #Kanthara come out of simplicity and innocence and NOT from OVER THINKING.”

But that was not the last word on the matter either. RGV took to Twitter again this morning to write, “ The @Shetty_Rishab destroys the myth in film people that only mega budget films will pull people into theatres .. #Kantara will be a major lesson for decades to come. In the film industry now, @Shetty_Rishab is like a Shiva multiplied by Guliga Daiva and the villains are the 300 cr , 400 cr , 500 cr budget film makers who are being killed by a heart attack called #Kantara collections. Thanks to the DEVIL called @shetty_rishab, all big budget film makers will now suddenly keep waking up in the night from the nightmare collections of #Kantara ,Like how Shiva keeps waking up to Guliga Daiva.”

Kantara, which initially released in Kannada only on September 30, was then dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Tulu, following immense demand for the same. The Hindi, Telugu and Tamil versions have been released, with each doing phenomenal business. The Telugu version, for instance, has swallowed up the other releases of the week, including Chiranjeevi’s Godfather. The Malayalam version is due on Thursday and all eyes are now on whether this rooted story from Kundapura will work wonders there too.
