In what has been a rather special week for Kannada cinema, Kantara has further risen in stature at the box office. Having closed the first week of its theatrical run a shy below Rs. 35 crores (gross) in Karnataka, the Rishab Shetty - Sapthami Gowda film has evolved to be nothing short of a phenomenon over the second week and has even surpassed the mighty K.G.F: Chapter 2 in its pursuits.
Yes, as the latest trade reports reveal, Kantara has yielded tremendous results in its home state of Karnataka, and week #2, in particular, has been extra special for the makers of the film. Thanks to the excellent word-of-mouth publicity that Kantara's collections have seen a steady growth from Day 8 to Day 14 of its theatrical run with the film concluding the second week by grossing close to Rs. 50 crores in Karnataka alone. The two-week combined box office earnings of the film are now well over Rs. 85 crores with the worldwide gross collections now inching closer to the Rs. 100 crores mark.
Another highlight of this extraordinary run is that Kantara has beaten KGF 2 with respect to the second-week collections (in Karnataka) by a fair margin. The Rocking Star Yash film, having already grossed over Rs. 100 crores in the first week alone, encountered a dip over week #2, and managed to collect approx. Rs. 34.2 crores (gross) - Kantara, on the other hand, has reportedly earned the makers more than Rs. 45 crores this past week.
Regardless, the winner in both cases remains Hombale Films with the production house reaping great rewards for the sound strategy they employed with respect to the distribution, release, and publicity of both films.
Kantara has also left 777 Charlie behind in this regard with the Rakshit Shetty starrer managing to collect only Rs. 22 crores (approx.) during its second week's stay in cinema halls. One will also have to consider the fact that unlike KGF 2 and 777 Charlie, did not start out to be a pan-Indian venture and had a limited-but-successful release in areas such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and other regional centres.
The Rishab Shetty directorial releases in Hindi as a dubbed version on October 14 with the Telugu and Tamil versions releasing on October 15. Kantara will also release in Malayalam with Prithviraj Sukumaran handling the distribution.
