Mammootty’s Kannur Squad, which is helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, hit theatres on September 28

Malayalam megastar Mammootty’s purple patch post pandemic continues with his latest theatrical release Kannur Squad , which hit the big screens on September 28. Now, we hear that the film’s OTT rights have been snapped by a leading streaming platform for a whopping sum.
The digital rights of the police procedural, which is helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, is reportedly bought by Sony LIV for the highest price it has paid for a Malayalam film so far. Incidentally, Mammootty’s OTT debut Puzhu had also been released on the same platform along with Dulquer Salmaan’s Salute.
Kannur Squad OTT release date
The film is expected to have a good run at the box office, and could only release on the platform in November 2023, after its theatrical run. Though recent releases such as RDX and King of Kotha have hit streaming platforms before the 41-day window, Kannur Squad, which is produced by Mammootty Kampany, is expected to adhere to FEUOK’s restrictions.
Kannur Squad continues Mammootty’s success run post pandemic
Kannur Squad, which is scripted by Rony David Raj and Muhammed Shafi, opened to largely positive reviews on Thursday. The film reportedly took in Rs 2 crore on its first day, as per trade analysts, and the positive reviews along with more shows being added in theatres across Kerala mean that the film is set for a good opening, considering it’s a long-weekend.
The film, which is based on true events and is inspired by a special team of officers in Kerala formed by IPS officer S Sreejith to investigate hard-to-crack cases, also has an ensemble cast featuring Azeez Nedumangad, Rony, Shabareesh Varma, Dhruvan, Arjun Radhakrishnan, Vijayaraghavan and Kishore, with a cameo by Sunny Wayne.
Kannur Squad has Mammootty essaying the role of ASI George Martin as he and his team chase four elusive criminals across the country. The movie has music by Sushin Shyam and was shot in Kerala and Maharashtra.
