Disney+ Hotstar has put an end to speculations about Mammootty-starrer Kannur Squad’s OTT release date, with an official announcement confirming that the superhit film, which is helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, will drop on the streaming platform post Diwali.
While there were rumours that the movie, which is also produced by Mammootty Kampany, was set for an OTT release on November 10, Disney+ Hotstar has now officially confirmed that Kannur Squad will begin streaming on the platform from November 17.
Why Kannur Squad’s OTT release is eagerly awaited?
The film, which had released in theatres in September 2023, became Mammootty’s highest-grossing movie ever, with the makers claiming that Kannur Squad had grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide. This is the first-ever Mammootty-starrer to enter the Rs 100 crore club, breaking the previous record of Amal Neerad’s Bheeshma Parvam which stopped shy of Rs 90 crore in worldwide box office.
The main reason Kannur Squad, which is co-scripted by Mohammed Rafi and Rony David Raj, worked at the box office, was the how the makers tried to ensure that the movie’s plot and its characters stayed grounded. This was more important, considering that the writers had borrowed heavily from true incidents of Kerala police’s Kannur Squad , a special team that was formed by former Kannur SP, S Sreejith.
Though Mammootty’s character George Martin did have a few ‘mass’ scenes in the film, its script was realistic. The film, which is about a group of police officers who embark on a chase across North India to track down four criminals responsible for a gruesome crime, is also Mammootty Kampany’s third successive hit after Rorschach and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam.
Kannur Squad to release in Hindi and Telugu?
While Disney+ Hotstar usually releases its Malayalam movies with dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada, the platform is yet to officially reveal if these versions will be available for Kannur Squad.
Meanwhile, the writers had also discussed the possibility of a sequel for Kannur Squad, after its massive success. Rony, who is also part of the film that has Arjun Radhakrishnan, Azeez Nedumangad and Shabareesh Varma, said that he and Mohammed will take time to ensure that the sequel’s script is better than the first movie; but as of now, they have not landed on an idea.
