Kannur Squad becomes Mammootty’s highest grossing film ever, Disney+ Hotstar reveals its OTT release plans

If there was one milestone that was evading megastar Mammootty in his stellar career so far, it was the Rs 100 crore club. Since the pandemic, the actor’s films such as Bheeshma Parvam came close to breaking that barrier, but it wasn’t until Kannur Squad that a Mammootty-starrer finally entered that elite list.

The makers of Kannur Squad, which is directed by Roby Varghese Raj, took to their social media handles to confirm that the crime drama-thriller had crossed Rs 100 crore in worldwide box office collections.

Kannur Squad breaks Bheeshma Parvam’s box office record

The previous Mammootty-starrer to have got record collections at the box office was Amal Neerad’s Bheeshma Parvam that fetched an amount just shy of Rs 90 crore. This was a huge feat considering that the movie released after the lockdown restrictions were lifted in Kerala in 2021.

But Kannur Squad, given its genre of a crime drama sans the usual ‘mass’ entertainer tropes, wasn’t really the top choice for a Mammootty film to enter the record books. That’s also what makes the film’s box office earnings special for its makers as well as the industry.

Based on true events, the film had Mammootty essaying the role of a police officer named George Martin, who leads his squad of cops from Kerala across India, in a bid to apprehend three elusive criminals. Even though the makers projected Mammootty’s character, in certain scenes, as a larger-than-life figure, the bulk of the film had him essay a grounded cop.

Disney+ Hotstar on Kannur Squad’s OTT release plans

With the movie crossing Rs 100 crore, all eyes are on the Kannur Squad’s OTT release date. OTTplay had previously reported that its streaming rights were bagged by Disney+ Hotstar. We got in touch with the platform to know when the movie is set to release digitally, and a senior official from the streaming service tells us, “The OTT release date is yet to be fixed for Kannur Squad. We will be announcing it shortly.”

Sources, however, tell us that the platform will drop the movie in multiple languages in November 2023. Mammootty, meanwhile, is also gearing up for the theatrical release of Kaathal – The Core , which is directed by Jeo Baby and has Jyotika as its female protagonist.
