Kannur Squad, a realistic investigative thriller starring Mammootty, is doing incredibly well at the box office. The Roby Varghese Raj directorial has crossed the ₹50 crore mark, just within nine days of its release, and has now made its way into the Top 10 highest-grossing Malayalam films. Additionally, it has also pushed Mohanlal’s Drishyam out of the 10th position.
Reports suggest that Kannur Squad has earned over ₹60 crores worldwide, with an expected collection of ₹30 crores from the Kerala box office alone in the near future. Mammootty’s son, actor Dulquer Salmaan, had congratulated the cast and crew of the film after it crossed the ₹50 crore mark.
Drishyam’s success at the box office
Mohanlal-starrer Drishyam, directed by Jeethu Joseph, was released in 2013. The film was Mohanlal’s first movie to cross the ₹50 crore mark, and also the first film in the industry to amass such a sum. The movie was later remade into several languages, including Hindi and Tamil. In 2021, Jeethu released a sequel to the film, Drishyam 2, which was a direct OTT release. Along with Lucifer and Pulimurugan, Drishyam is the third Mohanlal film to earn more than ₹50 crores globally.
What is Kannur Squad all about
The story of Kannur Squad is inspired by the experiences of a real squad in the Kerala Police Force. Rony David Raj, who also plays a pivotal role in the film, has co-written the script with Muhammed Shafi. This film is a thrilling investigative drama that follows a team of four police officers, as they pursue a few criminals who are on the loose after committing a murder.
Mammootty plays ASI George Martin, who leads the investigation team after one of his squad members is accused of bribery, tarnishing the squad’s reputation. The other key characters in the film are played by Shabareesh Varma, Azeez Nedumangad, Sunny Wayne and Shine Tom Chacko. Muhammed Rahil handled the camerawork, while Praveen Prabhakar, known for his work in Trance and Ustad Hotel, did the editing.
