Actor Kani Kusruti is currently enjoying the acknowledgment she received at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. The Malayalam actor gained acclaim for her performance in Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light, which won a Grand Prix award at the festival. In a recent interview, the actress revealed that she had gotten a call for the film The Kerala Story but she rejected it.
In an interview with Manorama Online, Kani revealed that she would rather not star in movies that do not support her political views. She said she would have no choice but to accept whatever is offered to her if none are made.
She said, “I can only do films that come to me. If I do not get employment, I will again have to choose films that do not align with my politics.” The actress also revealed that The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen called for the audition for the film but she chose to deny it. However, she did ‘Biriyaani’ even though it did not align with her politics.
“I had told Sajin (the director) that neither my politics nor aesthetics were aligned with the script. Sajin comes from a backward Muslim community and speaks his politics, which is correct in its own right. But that is not my politics,” she said.
Meanwhile, at the Cannes Film Festival, Kani supported Palestine amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict by walking the red carpet with a watermelon-shaped handbag.
All We Imagine As Light, her Malayalam-Hindi film has its Canned Film Festival debut. The film also stars Laapataa Ladies actress Chhaya Kadam. For the uninitiated, this was the first Indian movie to compete in the main category in thirty years. Payal Kapadia also became the first director to achieve the feat. Her movie won the Grand Prix, which is the Cannes Film Festival's second-highest honor. The film received an eight-minute standing ovation after the screening.
On the professional front, Kani Kusruti will be next seen in Nagendran's Honeymoon, a Malayalam series.
