Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency granted U/A Certificate with multiple cuts and disclaimers - Here's everything we know so far

Kangana Ranaut has been at odds with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India over her film Emergency, which was initially denied a U/A certificate due to several controversial scenes. The board refused to certify the film unless cuts were made, leading to the postponement of its original release date, which was set for September 6, 2024. In recent days, Ranaut has spoken out about the issue, at one point calling it unjust, especially in comparison to IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. However, there is now some relief for the actor and her team, as the movie has finally received a U/A certificate from the CBFC, albeit with certain cuts and added disclaimers. 

Emergency Gets A U/A Certificate

For those unfamiliar, Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is directed by Ranaut herself. The film covers Gandhi's tenure as Prime Minister, focusing on the period from her appointment to the declaration of the Emergency and her eventual assassination. The CBFC initially blocked the film by requesting several cuts before certification, which the filmmakers objected to. However, it seems that both parties have now reached a compromise. According to an Etimes report, Emergency has been granted a U/A certificate by the CBFC after the filmmakers agreed to three cuts and the addition of multiple disclaimers. The board requested the removal or modification of certain scenes. While detailed information about all the cuts is not available, some details have been shared.

As per the report, the CBFC ordered the removal or modification of a scene depicting Pakistani soldiers attacking Bangladeshi refugees. This includes a graphic scene where a soldier is shown smashing an infant's head and another where three women are beheaded. The board deemed the nature of these scenes unsuitable for audiences under the U/A category, which allows viewers of all ages, provided those under a certain age watch with parental guidance.

Kangana Ranaut on the CBFC Controversy

Kangana Ranaut, expressing her disappointment, had earlier announced the delay of her film. She wrote, "With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial Emergency has been postponed. We are still waiting for certification from the censor board. The new release date will be announced soon. Thanks for your understanding and patience."
