Kangana Ranaut is presently busy promoting her upcoming film 'Emergency'. The actress will be seen playing the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. The film not only stars her as the lead actor but also has her as a director and is based on the events of Emergency that happened in India in the mid-80s. Recently, the actress compared her film to Christopher Nola's Oscar-winning film, 'Oppenheimer.'
In a recent interview with India Today, Kangana Ranaut spoke about her upcoming film 'Emergency' and also mentioned that a 'close comparison of her film can be made with Oppenheimer. She said it has a similar approach as the Oscar-winning film wherein different perspectives can be expected and audiences will be confused to decide what to root for.
She said, “I don’t know why people are so uncomfortable with truth. As if it does not stand there glaring at us evidently, and so obviously. To me Ms. Gandhi is what she is and we cannot compartmentalize people as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. If you look from that perspective this film will open many doors for you but at the same time, a close comparison to draw with my film is maybe Oppenheimer,” she said.
Kangana further added, “You can't really decide whether to root for him, whether he is getting manipulated or he is manipulative. But aren't all of us like that? Life is not so limited. It demands you to be so much and at times to be the person you don't want to be." She then called her film "a Shakespearean tragedy."
"It is so much like Macbeth. Macbeth was destined to be the king, and when he becomes the king by killing the king the dagger follows him. His conscience follows him… The idea of Emergency is that the best of us can become a victim of hubris,” she added.
For the uninitiated, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer starred Cillian Murphy in the lead role. The film was one of the most successful movies ever winning 7 Oscars in 2024 including the 'Best Director' and 'Best Picture'.
Emergency, on the other hand, stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. The film also stars the late Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman in pivotal roles. The film releases in theatres on September 6.
