On the occasion of India's 76th Independence Day, Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan paid his tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi with a unique gesture. The actor has released one of his most iconic works, Hey Ram on the YouTube channel of his production house, Raaj Kamal Films International. Kamal Haasan made the announcement on his social media handle.
The period film is written, directed and produced by Kamal Haasan and is considered one of his most iconic works. Hey Ram depicts an alternate history of the partition of India and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. Kamal Haasan plays Saket Ram, who is asked to assassinate Bapu. However, when he learns about his teachings on love and non-violence, he refuses to undertake the mission. However, Gandhi is assassinated by Nathuram Godse.
The film stars Kamal Haasan , Shah Rukh Khan, Hema Malini, Rani Mukerji, Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Vikram Gokhale, Saurabh Shukla, Nassar, Vasundhara Das, Abbas, Atul Kulkarni, Sowcar Janaki to name a few. Music for the film is by Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja, cinematography by Tirru and editing by Renu Saluja. The film, bankrolled by Raaj Kamal Films International, was made in Tamil and India. Hey Ram bagged three National Awards. A digitally remastered version of the film is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video
Earlier, Kamal Haasan had shared his experience working in the film with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He had stated that though he was a bitter critic of Gandhi in his younger days, he eventually understood what he stood for, just like his character Saket Ram in Hey Ram. "Around the age of 24-25, I discovered Gandhi ji on my own and over the years, I have become a fan. I made the film Hey Ram to correct myself, and say sorry to him. I played a parallel assassin (Saket Ram) wanting to kill Gandhiji. As he goes nearer to the person and truth, he changes, but it is too late as somebody else has already done the job."
