Actor-filmmaker Udhayanidhi Stalin has sparked the excitement among fans of Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan by hinting at the potential for an Indian 3. During a recent media interaction while promoting his latest film Maamannan, Udhayanidhi revealed that director Shankar has a significant amount of unused footage, sparking discussions about a potential sequel.

"Recently, they (the cast and crew) finished a big schedule in South Africa. We are thinking of doing Indian 3. But, they haven't decided on anything yet. The filmmakers have told me that they have a lot of footage. Kamal sir and Shankar sir are very happy," he said.

Udhayanidhi noted that he was no longer part of Red Giant Movies, the production house which is bankrolling Indian 2 along with Lyca Productions. However, the latest information he heard about Indian 2 is that the film is fast nearing completion with about 25 days of shooting left. And the filmmakers have planned to release the movie in April of 2024.

After being appointed as a minister in the Tamil Nadu cabinet, Udhayanidhi announced his retirement from the cinema business, stating that he would no longer be involved in film production or distribution. Maamannan marks his final film as an actor.

It was worth noting that Udhayanidhi played a key role in the revival of Indian 2. The fate of the project had remained uncertain for over two years due to a series of setbacks and conflicts. Indian 2 faced a major setback in February 2020 when a tragic accident occurred on set. The accident claimed the lives of three crew members and left several others injured. This devastating incident led to a halt in production, and the future of the film seemed bleak. Subsequent disputes between Shankar and the production company Lyca Productions exacerbated the situation, resulting in legal battles and an impasse. As a consequence, Indian 2 was pushed to the back burner, and the cast members moved on to other projects.

In the meantime, Kamal produced and acted in Vikram, which became one of the biggest earners of Indian cinema in 2022, Shankar started shooting Game Changer with Telugu superstar Ram Charan.

Thanks to the success of Vikram, Indian 2 was revived with the help of Red Giant Movies.
