Kalki 2898 AD, the epic sci-fi film directed by Nag Ashwin has emerged as a major commercial success. The movie, which stars a stellar star cast including Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, is rooted in Indian mythology. However, the film fanatics identified some major Western cinema inspirations in Nag Ashwin’s film. Especially Kamal Haasan’s character Supreme Yaskin was compared to the Harry Potter antagonist, Voldemort. In a recent interview, the filmmaker admitted that he has indeed taken inspiration from the JK Rowling franchise, but it is not for the Ulaganayagan’s role.

In a recent interview with Zoom, Nag Ashwin revealed that he has indeed taken inspirations from Western films, for his passion project. However, the talented filmmaker denied taking inspiration from Voldemort of the Harry Potter franchise, for Kamal Haasan’s character Supreme Yaskin. According to the director, their references for Yaskin were the old Tibetan monks, who are supposed to be 120–130 years old. Kamal Haasan always mentioned the portrait of Dorian Gray (from the 1890 philosophical novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, which was the actor's inspiration.

However, they didn't have many film references for the ancient look of Supreme Yaskin. But Nag Ashwin took inspiration from the Harry Potter franchise while naming the character played by Vinay Kumar. The character Sirius, played by Vinay in Kalki 2898 AD, is named after Sirius Black (played by popular actor Gary Oldman in the film), the Godfather of Harry Potter and one of the marauders.

Nag Ashwin, who further spoke about taking inspiration from Western films, revealed that Marvel characters have inspired the character Bhairava, played by Prabhas. However, more than Ironman, it is the Guardians of the Galaxy that inspired the character. The filmmaker, who is a huge fan of Star Wars, admitted that it has been a huge inspiration for Kalki 2898 AD, especially when it comes to the aesthetics of the film. Nag Ashwin added that they could be a few Dune inspirations, as he absolutely loved that world.
