The resurrection of the horror genre in Hindi cinema beyond the horrex trope that we were so obsessed with is one of the best things to happen. Now we are talking about rooted stories in Indian folklore that also cater to the contemporary audience while not relying on some other industry for inspiration. While we recently saw Munjya take over the theatres and come out as a success story for bringing something new to the audience, Aditya Sarpotdar, the director of the Abhay Verma starrer, has released another movie in the same domain. No, it isn't a part of the Stree universe and sits in its different realm. Kakuda stars Sonakshi Sinha, Saqib Saleem, and Riteish Deshmukh in the leading roles and has now landed on Zee5. The movie that talks of another horror folklore that is deeply rooted is not as ace as the Dinesh Vijan-produced movies but is certainly an interesting story.
Kakuda, which stars the three actors alongside Aasif Khan, who plays a pivotal part, is about a ghost in a village called Ratodi who marks his attendance every evening at 7:15. The mandate is that every house needs to have a dwarf door dedicated to him and it should be open when he comes. Also, a man from the family should be there to greet him. If anyone fails to do so, they will be cursed by Kakuda, which will form a hump on their back, and they will die in the next 13 days. Saqib Saleem fails to open the door, and now Sonakshi Sinha needs to save her husband.
Kakuda, in a way, is a story very deeply rooted in a land that is equal parts superstitious and also right about the ghost that has haunted them for life and killed many. The town goes numb when Sunny (Saqib Saleem) is the latest prey of Kakuda, and that leaves Sonakshi Sinha with no option but to bring in Victor, a ghost hunter played by Riteish Deshmukh. The end of the film is quite complicated as it plays at full speed. We see the team of five, including Sunny, Victor, Indu, her twin sister, and Aasif Khan, all battling it out with Kakuda, who is intending to stop them from destroying him. Riteish Deshmukh realizes that the power of the ghost exists in his right leg, which he uses to kick while he lays the wrath on the ones who fail to open the door and greet him.
However, the plan fails in the first leg, only for Indu to realize that Kakuda trusts her sister, who is equally dejected by the society that also did injustice to Kakuda. So Indu, dressed up as her sister, takes the risk of killing Kakuda, and she succeeds. This leads to Kakuda’s ghost disappearing as he is now powerless without his right foot. The movie ends here.
Following the Stree Universe trope, Aditya Sarpotdar also adds a post-credit scene to Kakuda. We see the village having moved from the scare of Kakuda, and no one is opening the door. But suddenly, one fine day, a man hears someone knocking on the door violently at 7:15. The door opens with a thud, and the person standing in front is kicked by a spirit again. Kakuda hasn't died. Maybe the future of the film is laid here with an intention to turn it into a franchise. Part two, of course, depends on whether the first works or not.
Kakuda is now streaming on Zee5, and you can watch it with your OTTplay Premium subscription too. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything from the world of streaming and films.
