Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Karan Johar reflects on the enduring significance of the SRK-starrer, says ‘Will always be special to me…’

Karan Johar has directed and produced a number of cult-classic films in Bollywood, including the 2006 film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta, among others. Dealing with the issue of infidelity, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna explored different layers of the human psyche. Karan Johar recently commented about how special the film is to him after a netizen praised the director for making a movie on complex relationships way back in 2006.

Karan Johar on Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

Taking to Instagram, Karan Johar reacted to an Instagram user’s story which read, “This scene @karanjohar knew more about relationship 18 years ago than we do even now! Karan, you Genius you!.” In response, Karan shared the post on his Instagram stories and wrote, “Emaan...this film will always be so special to me and a film that continues to give us all as a team so much love..the grey in relationships are so complicated but always override the promised white lof love...”

When Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna received backlash

While the film was a box office success, it received a lot of backlash for its storyline, revolving around infidelity. Even actress Kajol once revealed that she disagreed with the film and believed that characters should have worked on their failing marriage, rather than cheat on their respective partners. During an interaction with the director on Koffee With Karan Season 2, she said, “I just didn’t agree with it, I feel when you get married, you should want to work on it. As a woman watching the film, I wish she had worked on it in some way.”

Meanwhile, Rani in an interview with Galatta India said that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is one of her favourite films and the movie helped her make the right decision, regarding her marriage. She said, “So as a young girl at that point of time when I did KANK, it also helped me to decide for my marriage that I need to marry for the right reason. Because if you marry for the wrong reason, you will end up being with a person and suffer all your life.”

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna  plot

The 2006 film centres around two couples whose life gets intertwined when Maya (played by Rani Mukerji) and Dev (played by Shah Rukh Khan) cheat on their respective partners, Rishi (played by Abhishek Bachchan) and Riya (played by Preity Zinta). This romantic drama deals with emotions of love, laughter and loss while exploring the dark side of human personalities.
