After a successful 25-day run in theatres, Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, is available on Disney+Hotstar, starting today. (May 27) The two hours; 37-minute film, featuring Nayanthara, Samantha and Vijay Sethupathi, is said to have minted Rs 45 crore at the box office, worldwide. Though the quirky love triangle received a positive response from the audience, critics thrashed the film; directed by Vignesh Shivn, for its problematic portrayal of polyamory.
Reacting to criticisms, in an interview with a regional YouTube channel, the director said, he doesn't know much about concepts like sexism and feminism. "I don't know if I have the maturity to balance the fun elements and social issues in a film. Generally, I make movies to entertain the crowd. Even when I pen lyrics for a song, I'll be thinking about how to make it a hit, in the first place. I am simply concerned about the entertainment, overall. That's how I'm wired to process my thoughts," he added.
Notably, Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal was the 25th film by Anirudh Ravichander, as the music composer.
In an interview with OTTplay, Vijay Sethupathi spoke about reuniting with the Naanum Rowdy Dhaan director. “It has been nothing short of a wonderful experience,” he said, adding, Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal was a one-man show by Vignesh Shivn. “I am amazed by the sense of clarity he has in a few things that belie his age!”
Bankrolled by Seven Screen Studios and Rowdy Pictures, the film, also featuring choreographer Kala, Prabhu Ganesan, Redin Kingsley, Seema, and cricketer Sreesanth, hit the screens on April 28.
OTTplay's review read, "Everything about Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal is inconclusive and bizarre. It’s a disappointing watch. A film that begins with no story, naturally, ends with no story."
Well, did you know that initially, the makers had planned this film with Nayanthara and Trisha, but the project didn’t take off?
(The film is currently running in theatres, too.)
