Kannada cinema’s Challenging Star Darshan closed out 2023 with Kaatera, his newest collaboration with Tharun Kishore Sudhir, which was well received by audiences. Darshan the performer is back, was the common refrain one heard about the actor’s role in the film that was bankrolled by Rockline Venkatesh. A period film, Kaatera introduced a new leading lady to Kannada cinema in the form of Aradhanaa, the daughter of veteran actress Malashree and late producer Koti Ramu. The makers had managed to strike a satellite and digital deal with Zee Network prior to its theatrical outing. It was reported that the film would make it to streaming within 45 days and as per the streamer’s current plan, that’s exactly how it will play out.

Kaatera, which released in theatres on December 29, 2023, is set to come on Zee5 Kannada and according to the latest, it will be an early birthday present from Darshan for his fans. Kaatera will be available to stream on Zee5 Kannada from February 9. Kaatera will be a Kannada-only release as of now. The film did not have a multi-lingual theatrical outing and while the team has indicated that it could be dubbed in other languages based on demand, reports suggest that a Telugu version may be released in a week or two.

In Kaatera, Darshan played a blacksmith, who is forced to wield the weapons he forges to fight for the benefit of villagers who were being oppressed by the local zamindar. The film also stars Shruti, Jagapathi Babu, Kumar Govind, among others. Prior to the release of the film, although Tharun was confident about the quality of the subject that he wrote along with Jadesha K Hampi (Guru Shishyaru director), he was a tad worried about whether audiences would accept Darshan in a previously-not-seen role that was more experimental than toeing his commercial hero image. But that is exactly what worked for audiences, who have been thronging theatres.

The actor needed the win, as he’d begun the year with a dud in the form of Kranti. Up next, he is collaborating with Tarak maker Milana Prakash on a film called Devil.
