Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaapa, a gangster drama based on GR Indugopan’s novel titled Shankumukhi, hit theatres on December 22. The OTT rights of the movie, which also has Asif Ali, Anna Ben and Aparna Balamurali, was bagged by a leading digital platform that is expected to begin streaming the movie in January 2023.

The film, which marks the second collaboration of actor-director duo Prithviraj and Shaji Kailas this year after Kaduva, has the actor essaying the role of Kotta Madhu, a local thug-turned-gangster with political ambitions.

The movie kicks off when a young couple – Anand Anirudhan and Binu Trivikraman, essayed by Asif Ali and Anna Ben – move to Thiruvananthapuram. The former finds out that Binu has been included in the list of criminals under Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, taking into account the criminal activities that have been claimed by a gang under her name. Anand must first make Kotta Madhu believe that she’s innocent and it’s not an easy task considering that his gang had murdered her brother in daylight and her former neighbour is out for his blood.

OTT platform Netflix has bagged the rights for Kaapa, which is co-produced by the FEFKA writer’s union. Prithviraj’s Jana Gana Mana, which was his first theatrical release since the pandemic, is also currently streaming on the platform.

Meanwhile, the actor had recently said that Kaapa isn’t a “line-by-line depiction” of Indugopan’s Shankumukhi and director Shaji Kailas has taken cinematic liberties for the movie adaptation. The film, which has cinematographer Jomon T John and composer Dawn Vincent as part of the crew, also has Jagadeesh, Nandu and Dileesh Pothan in pivotal roles.

Prithviraj’s upcoming movie Vilayath Buddha is also based on Indugopan’s novel. The actor had confirmed that he had also signed another movie based on the work of the writer, who had also scripted Oru Thekkan Thallu Case, which is also streaming on Netflix.
