Kaafir is based on the true incident of Shehnaz Parveen, a Kashmiri lady living in Pakistani-administered territory who was detained in India for eight years after inadvertently crossing the LoC. They suspected her of being a militant. Like Parveen, the film's protagonist, Kainaaz (Dia Mirza), ends up on the Indian side of the border as a result of a series of terrible events. Because she is considered a danger to the country's security, she has been in prison for seven years. Kainaaz has a daughter while she is in prison and raises her in the harsh conditions of her cell.
