June Maliah on Love Biye Aajkal: I wanted to take this challenge of playing a negative character

After playing the character of a dignified mother-in-law in Gaatchora, June Maliah plays a negative character in the serial Love Biye Aaj Kal. The actress started her acting career 30 years ago. She became a household name with her performance in Trishna, Rupkotha, etc in the 90s. She saw many ups and downs in her career and personal life. She is also a politician. 

In an interview with Anandabazar Online, the actress said that she has so far been happy with her career. “I am very happy and have no complaints. My career started from this floor where we are talking now. That was my first modeling assignment. I was seen for a glimpse in one of the films by Rituparno Ghosh. That was also shot on this floor. My first film Lathi’s shooting was also done here. Love Biye Aaj Kal’s producer Jisshu U Sengupta and I first met on this floor. There are lots of memories,” she said.

Talking about the negative streaks in her current serial, June said, “I acted in a negative role in the serial Resham Jhapi. Since then, I have been playing the role of a good mother. Then I thought, enough!” In Love Biye Aajkal, she plays the role of a plotting woman. “When I talked to Nilanjanaa (Senguptaa, producer), I thought of accepting this challenge. I also liked the look of the character Mrittika,” she added.  

June is also a public representative. “My phone rings constantly. Sometimes the director scolds me for that. I go to Midnapore each week. But I enjoy it a lot and I love the crowd,” she said. 

Is she afraid that playing a negative character might affect her image? “Not at all. The two are completely different worlds. People know that I am only acting. I got lots of love from people and hence no such thought bothers me.
