The much more exciting sequel awaits less time than anticipated as the Indian premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux takes place on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, two days before its international release. Todd Phillips helms the forthcoming musical psychological thriller, while Scott Silver writes the script. Based on characters from DC Comics, it's the follow-up to 2019's Joker and features Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker again, alongside Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, his love interest. In addition to Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz is back for her role from the last film. Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, and Joint Effort are responsible for producing it.
Joker: Folie à Deux plot overview
Arthur Fleck, a patient at Arkham State Hospital two years after the events of Joker (2019), develops romantic feelings for Lee, a music therapist. As the two go musically insane from their shared delusions, Arthur's supporters launch an effort to free him.
Characters background
For the uninitiated, Phoenix plays the role of Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker, a nihilistic criminal who suffers from mental illness and has a clown persona. Fleck was once a homeless party clown and aspiring stand-up comic. Director Todd Phillips guaranteed that, although delving deeper into Fleck's mind is part of the sequel, he will not transform into the "Clown Prince of Crime" he is in the original, with his "Joker" identity becoming an unwelcome symbol to those who offer him the affection he has always desired.
Lady Gaga portrays Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn, a music therapist at Arkham State Hospital, who encounters Fleck. Her initial interest in him develops into an unhealthy obsession, and she develops a dangerous romantic relationship with him.
According to Phillips, who described Quinzel in Joker (2019), the character has become more grounded, manipulative, and immoral. The film has purposefully removed several of Quinzel's signature quirks and styles to make them more fitting.
Although Warner Bros. planned for Joker to kick off a DC Black film series, the film was originally designed to stand on its own. Phillips expressed his intention to create a sequel, emphasising that the structure of Joker did not facilitate one. After Beetz and Gaga joined forces later that year, production on the sequel began in June 2022. Principal photography took place in Belleville, New Jersey, New York City, and Los Angeles from December 2022 to April 2023.
Release schedule and film festival premiere
Warner Bros. Pictures has scheduled the theatrical release of Joker: Folie à Deux for October 2, 2024, followed by its release in the United States two days later, on October 4, 2024. The film will have its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2024, and it will be competing for the Golden Lion.
