The Academy of Motion Pictures unveiled the nominees for the upcoming awards ceremony on February 8.

In the Best Picture category, Leonardo DiCaprio's Netflix film Don't Look Up was nominated but the superhero feature Spider-Man No Way from Home was snubbed. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel took umbrage at this on the February 8 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

"How did [Spider-Man: No Way Home] not get one of the 10 nominations for best picture? Forget the fact that the movie made $750 million [in the US] and is still going. This was a great movie. It wasn’t in the top 10 best movies of the year? There were three Spider-Men in it. You’re telling me Don’t Look Up was better than Spider-Man? It most certainly was not," Kimmel said, according to Deadline.

He further noted that if a viewer ever went on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, they will notice that top critics have rated No Way Home at 90% and Don't Look Up just has 46%.

Kimmel's outrage is not all misplaced as superhero films have been deemed as inferior in the recent discourse. Filmmakers have often called out Marvel and other franchises for "diluting" the artistic value of cinema.

Don't Look Up is among the Best Picture contenders with Belfast, CODA, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, Westside Story and Power of the Dog. It has also been nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Film Editing.

Meanwhile, No Way Home only managed to bag a single nom for Best Visual Effects.
