Jigarthanda Double X on OTT: All things you need to know

Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj's latest film Jigarthanda Double X is all set to make its streaming debut this week. The film will become available for streaming on Netflix on December 8, less than a month after its theatrical release.

Jigarthanda Double X arrived in cinemas on November 10, at a time when the box office was still under the spell of Thalapathy Vijay's blockbuster movie Leo. The film also faced serious competition from actor Karthi's Japan. Despite such strong challenges, Jigarthanda Double X managed to leave a mark at the box office.

Thanks to very positive reviews from critics, Jigarthanda Double X started to gain momentum in cinemas. The film showed encouraging growth in terms of footfalls as Japan was unanimously panned by both critics and audiences alike.

Even though Jigarthanda Double X took a stronger position at the box office following the opening weekend, and its screen count increased during the second week, the film fell short of fetching the desired results.

According to reports, Jigarthanda Double X is touted to be a box office disappointment. The film's lifetime collection from worldwide ticket sales is pegged at Rs 66 crore against the production cost of nearly Rs 100 crore.

Jigarthanda Double X is a spiritual sequel to Jigarthanda (2014), the film that made Karthik Subbaraj a force to reckon with in the Tamil film industry. Akin to its predecessor, the follow-up film also tells the story of an aspiring filmmaker trying to make a movie with a real-life gangster.

However, Jigarthanda Double X is set in the 1970s against the backdrop of Madurai. "Karthik Subbaraj offers an engaging cinematic experience with moving visuals and strong performances while highlighting the cinema's responsibility towards society to make sense of life," reads OTTplay's 3.5-star review.

Jigarthanda Double X features Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah in the lead roles, while Naveen Chandra, Nimisha Sajayan, and Shine Tom Chacko among others play supporting roles.
