Shahid Kapoor’s much-awaited sports drama, Jersey, is gearing up for its big release after much delay. Shahid Kapoor has now revealed why the makers did not want to sell the movie to an OTT platform despite offers.
Talking to Pinkvilla, the actor said that it is great to see people go to theatres and that in the last three months, the makers of Jersey have received offers from several OTT players.
“Everybody just loves the film too much and we are confident of what we have made. We made this film with the intent of being viewed on the big screen,” he said.
The actor further added that the emotionality of the film is in a way that it is best when viewed as a group and now that the Omicron is over, the team is primed and ready for its release.
Shahid also spoke about the film being postponed from its initial release. He said that the makers kept a close eye on Omicron and did not think things would ease down soon and so they decided to push back the release.
Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, Jersey is a sports drama which also features Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapur, and Shishir Sharma among others. The movie is the official remake of the hit Telugu film of the same name. Interestingly, Gowtam had also helmed the Telugu film.
Starring Nani in the lead, Jersey came out in 2019 and received critical acclaim. The movie followed a failed cricketer who tries to make his return to the game in his 30s in the hope of representing the national team.
The Hindi remake is finally set to hit theatres around the country on April 14, 2022. The OTT release of this film is not yet confirmed but Jersey is likely to release on Amazon Prime Video after its theatrical run. It could be out in May or June (since most films tend to go for an OTT release 45 days after being in theatres).
