Over the years, Malayalam actor has made a name out of playing the most challenging of characters and winning laurels for the same. His previous two movies – G Prajesh Sen’s Meri Awaas Suno and Abhijith Joseph’s John Luther – had him playing characters with speech and hearing impairments.
While the actor was praised for his performances in the both the films, he now seems to have taken a decision to not play such characters again. In the past decade alone, Jayasurya had essayed the role of the titular character who overcomes his speech impediment in Su.. Su.. Sudhi Vathmeekam and as a polio-inflicted youth in Amar Akbar Antony. These roles too were won him praise from all quarters.
However, at a recent promotional meet of John Luther in Dubai, the actor said that he won’t be taking up anymore roles of characters that are physically or emotionally challenged. In Meri Awaas Suno, he plays a successful RJ who is forced to confront with the fact that he would lose his voice after being diagnosed with cancer.
In John Luther, his character suffers hearing loss in the middle of an investigation, but picks himself up and carries on despite the challenge. In a recent interview with OTTplay, the actor talked about the main hurdles while playing such a character.
“For this character, I couldn’t go prepared. The only way to judge my performance was to see how it on the screen,” he said. “The volume and tone of a person who has a hearing impairment are different from how we normally speak and so I had to make those adjustments without it sounding irritating to the audience or my performance being redundant.”
Meanwhile, Jayasurya will next be seen in a cameo role in Kunchacko Boban and Nivetha Thomas’ Enthaada Saji. He is also gearing up to shoot his biggest film yet, Kathanar, which is a 3D fantasy thriller helmed by #Home director Rojin Thomas.
