If you are one of those few who didn’t get an opportunity to watch Basil Joseph and Darshana Rajendran’s comedy entertainer Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey in theatres, then don’t fret as the Vipin Das directorial is all set to begin streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from December 22.
The movie, which hit theatres in the final week of October, has already gone on to become one of the highest-grossing movies in Malayalam cinema this year, raking in close to Rs 45 crores from box office collections worldwide. Here are reasons this film must be in your watchlist during the festive weekend.
Hilarious take on a relevant issue
The movie revolves around its female protagonist Jayabharathi, whose life has been dictated by the decisions made by the men in her family. She hopes this would change after her wedding, but her husband turns out to be another chauvinist. This prompts Jaya to take matters into her own hands. How she manages to kick out of her predicament forms the plot of the film.
The movie’s director Vipin had said that he had two versions of the film’s script and as it dealt with serious topics such as domestic violence and how women aren’t treated equally in a family or a relationship, his initial idea was a much more serious take on the subject. However, he later felt that it wasn’t a film that would appeal to the audience and decided to take a lighter route to tell the story.
Darshana Rajendran packs a punch
In her career so far, Darshana has picked roles that showcased the performer in her. Be it C U Soon or this year’s Hridayam, the actress showed that she has what it takes to ace any role. But action and comedy were probably not areas that the audience had expected her to test and come up trumps.
Her role as Jayabharathi has already got her fanbase expanding, especially among the family audience. She aces those action as well as emotional scenes with equal ease in the movie, which is a far cry from the roles she has done so far.
Basil Joseph’s antagonist turn
Post the pandemic, Basil had insisted that he had started chasing roles that made use of the actor in him. With Palthu Janwar, he showed he could carry a film on his own and with Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, the actor-director proved that he has in his arsenal, the tricks to also play an antagonist – even one shown in a lighter vein.
His character Rajesh, who reeks of patriarchal mindset, holds the mirror to several men in the society who don’t value the women in their lives or take them for granted.
Stellar supporting cast
Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey follows in the laudable spirit of Malayalam movies that have a brilliant supporting cast. From Azeez Nedumangad, Sunil Paravoor, Manju Pillai and Aju Varghese to Anand Manmadhan, Sarath Sabha and Kudassanad Kankam, the actors in the film add to the comic moments in the film while also keeping it rooted, whenever possible that is.
A festive film for the family audience
While most of the superhits in Malayalam this year owe their success to the youngsters, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey is one of the rare few films that attracted audiences of all ages, especially the family audience. This is also what makes the film a good watch for families during the Christmas weekend, if a theatre visit for the latest releases such as Kaapa, Naalaam Mura, Oh Meri Laila and Aanandham Paramaanandham is not on the cards.
