This year, director Vipin Das showed his range as a filmmaker with two movies that are poles apart. If his direct-to-OTT release Anthakshari, starring Saiju Kurup, was a dark, intense thriller, his latest movie Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey was a hilarious take on a rather serious subject. However, the director said that he had written two versions of the scripts for both the movies.
In a recent interview with Film Companion, Vipin divulged if he had taken extra effort to ensure that his lead character in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey mirrored how women in today’s society no longer take domestic abuse and give it back.
“I have always thought of making a movie that was different the ones that we have already seen,” he said, adding that he had written the scripts for his first three movies – Mudhugauv, Anthakshari and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey before the pandemic.
So, the first draft of Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey was complete much before the pandemic. “I want to make movies that people would watch even after two years. So, I try to ensure that my scripts have a shelf-life of at least five years. I try to revisit to my script and see if I get bored by it after some time,” said the filmmaker.
Vipin, in the interview, also mentioned that he had written two scripts for Anthakshari and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey. The former had a fast-paced version that was changed after more such movies had released and the latter’s initial script was a more serious take on the subject of women caught in web of patriarchy and domestic violence.
The director also mentioned that for his next project also, he is working on the second version. “I am now comfortable with this process because it’s what I have been doing for so long,” he said, adding that he tries to tweak the scripts taking into account instances from what’s happening in the world around him rather than from other movies.
Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, which is already amongst the top 6 highest grossing Malayalam movies of 2022, is set to release on Disney+ Hotstar after two months of its theatrical release on December 22.
