Jawan: 6 Atlee films to watch on OTT before the action-thriller starring Shah Rukh Khan

Renowned Tamil filmmaker Atlee is set to make his much-awaited Bollywood debut with Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan. The film promises to be an action entertainer to remember. After all, Atlee is no stranger to delivering action films with larger-than-life characters and over-the-top set pieces. The film is also expected to break several box office records, and it also stars  Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone, Priyamani, and Sanya Malhotra in prominent roles. So if you are a fan of masala entertainers, then we have curated a list of Atlee’s films that should be on your watchlist.

Raja Rani - Disney+ Hotstar

The first film on this list is the 2013 film Raja Rani. The film stars Arya and Nayanthara in lead roles as John and Regina, who are forced to marry for the sake of their parents, despite their mutual animosity. However, when John and Regina find out about each other’s tragic past, they secretly develop feelings for each other. The film would go on to become one of the biggest Tamil hits of the year and was also remade in Bengali as the 2015 film Shudhu Tomari Jonyo starring Dev and Srabanti Chatterjee.

Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae - Disney+ Hotstar

The horror comedy Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae stars Jiiva, Sri Divya, and Soori in lead roles, with  Radha Ravi, Thambi Ramaiah, and Raadhika Sarathkumar essaying supporting roles. Directed by Ike Radha and produced by Atlee, the 2017 film revolves around Vasu and his mother Parvathy who move to a new town on the outskirts of a city.  However, their excitement about their new home soon spirals into chaos when Vasu discovers that the house is haunted. While the film may not be as revered as some of the other titles on this list, it offers a gripping tale that will keep its audience entertained.

Theri - Amazon Prime Video

The next film on the list is the 2016 blockbuster hit Theri. Helmed by Atlee, the action thriller stars Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson in lead roles. Tamil superstar Vijay slips into the role of DCP Vijaya Kumar, an honest policeman from Chennai who is compelled to live under a disguise for the safety of his daughter. But his peaceful world is soon torn apart as adversaries from his past attempt to harm his daughter. As one would expect, Vijaya Kumar decides to seek retribution against the gangsters. The film broke several box office records during its theatrical run and would go on to become Vijay’s first film to cross ₹150 crores.

Bigil - Amazon Prime Video

The second Vijay blockbuster to make this list is the 2019 sports action drama Bigil. Directed by Atlee, the film tells the story of a local gangster Michael Rayappan, who embodies the Robin Hood archetype as a man who serves the destitute. When a rival gangster attacks and paralyses Michael’s friend Kathir, the coach of the Tamil Nadu women’s football team, Michael decides to stand in for his fallen friend. He is then forced to rally a reluctant team under his command as they travel to Delhi for a national football tournament. Nayanthara, Jackie Shroff, Vivek and Kathir essay other prominent roles in the film.

Mersal - - Disney+ Hotstar

The 2017 film Mersal, starring Vijay reportedly broke the box-office records held by Theri in the previous year. The Atlee directorial stars Vijay in a triple role – as Vetrimaaran a deceased wrestler who was renowned for his wealth and altruism in his village, and as Vetrimaaran’s sons, the estranged brothers Maaran (who’s a doctor) and Vetri (who’s a magician). The plot revolves around the brothers uniting several years later in order to exact vengeance against those responsible for their father’s death. S. J. Suryah, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu essay other prominent roles in this blockbuster action thriller.

Andhaghaaram - Netflix

The final film on this list is the horror thriller Andhaghaaram. The film revolves around three men whose lives are interconnected through an eerie supernatural link. Dr. Indran, a psychiatrist who lost his license after a violent patient murders  his family, is central to the three stories. Vinod is a cricket coach who is traumatised by the suicide of his best friend, while Selvam is a blind man with a large inheritance who works as a clerk at a public library. As their stories unravel, they reveal a dark and sinister plot behind the horrifying happenings around them. Arjun Das, Vinoth Kishan, and Kumar Natarajan play the lead roles in this film directed by V. Vignarajan and produced by Atlee.
