Jason Momoa to star in live-action Minecraft movie set at Warner Bros

Movies based on video games, such as Sonic The Hedgehog have done well with the audience. Now according to the latest reports, Aquaman actor Jason Momoa is set to star in a live-action Minecraft movie. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be helmed by Jared Hess, who has previously directed the comedy Napoleon Dynamite back in 2004. The report suggests that Momoa is in the final stages of negotiations with Warner Bros. to star in the movie. 

Dune producer Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, with Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts as executive producers. Warner Bros. have been trying to pull off a movie based on the video game for years now, with filmmakers such as Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney among names mentioned as possible directors. 

Developed by Mojang Studios, Minecraft became a worldwide sensation after its release in 2011, reaching 100 million users just a few years after launch. The game allows players to explore an endless 3D generated world using colorful blocks by mining materials, crafting items and creating worlds. 

Shawn Levy’s Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds and Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog movies have all recently found success with fans. With Warner Bros. looking to follow suit, Momoa could give the movie an added boost. 

Jason Momoa was last seen as Duncan Idaho in Dune and is set to return as the King of Atlantis in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The thirteenth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the movie is set for a March 17, 2023 release.
