Karthi is gearing up for the release of his next, Japan, which is directed by Raju Murugan. Japan marks 25th film as an actor and hence expectations are riding high from the film. Here's all you need to know about the landmark project of the Ponniyin Selvan actor.
A quirky trailer
We hear that Karthi's character in the film is inspired by the life of real life robber Tiruvarur Murugan, who is involved in some major jewellery thefts in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Karthi plays a notorious thief named Japan, who gives the cops a run for their money. And after every theft, he flies off to an exotic location and has a gala time there.

Behind the scenes
The audio launch of the film was one of the high-profile launches with the who's who of the industry being part of the cast. Karthi's elder brother Suriya, who had come all the way from Thailand, turned many heads. Together the brothers created a Rolex- Dilli moment, and that too in the presence of Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Controversy
During the promotions of the film, Karthi while responding to a question on his iconic film Madras, said that he didn't look at the Pa Ranjith film with the caste lens. He later went on to add that having brought up in Chennai, he didn't know caste. The comment landed him in controversy as Madras is made by a vocal anto-caste filmmaker Pa Ranjith. The film was hard-hitting take on caste-based politics and how people from the oppressed communities often become a pawn in the process.
The cast and crew
GV Prakash Kumar has scored the music. While the cinematography is by Ravi Varman, editing is by Philomin Raj. The star cast includes Anu Emmanuel, Jithan Ramesh, KS Ravikumar, Sunil, Vijay Milton, Vagai Chandrasekar and Bava Chelladurai.
