The Malayalam audience have been eagerly awaiting the release of Jana Gana Mana, ever since the makers revealed the teaser of the film, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu, back in January 2021. The socio-political entertainer is now ready for its release – almost one and a half years since it went on floors.
The film marks the second time Prithviraj and Suraj play lead characters in a movie together, after their superhit Driving Licence. However, the film’s director Dijo Jose Antony, who had previously directed Queen, tells OTTplay that Jana Gana Mana’s characters have no similarity to the protagonists in Driving Licence or the chemistry shared between the duo onscreen.
What is Jana Gana Mana about?
In fact, he says that both Prithviraj and Suraj’s characters are part of a bigger story that revolves around that of a mother and her two daughters – essayed by Shari, Mamta Mohandas and Vaishnavi, respectively.
Prithviraj too had recently told us that the movie’s story isn’t based on a particular place or time. In fact, it’s a story that people across the country can relate to, he says, and that’s what makes the movie a pan-Indian venture. The movie was also shot in several states including Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, and is made on a big scale. It’s also Prithviraj’s first theatrical release since the pandemic began.
When and where to watch Jana Gana Mana?
Though the film was shot during the pandemic, Prithviraj, who is also co-producing the film, said that there was never any intention to release it on OTT platforms. In fact, when representatives of various streaming services had approached them for an OTT premiere of the film, the makers made it clear that Jana Gana Mana was off the table.
The film is set to release in theatres worldwide on April 28. The movie will be released in Malayalam as Jana Gana Mana, and in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada as Jana 2022. The film will be available to stream on Netflix, after its theatrical run.
