With Jailer, Nelson Dilipkumar joins the elite list of Tamil filmmakers whose films have grossed Rs. 500 crores at the box office. The latest action entertainer has marked superstar Rajinikanth's return to form in a thumping fashion and has also emerged as the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. To top that, Jailer seems well on course to breach more landmarks and possibly beat the previous year's mainstays Vikram and Ponniyin Selvan: I in its pursuits.
But the icing on the cake remains the fact the film has yielded great results not just in Tamil Nadu but also beyond, with the neighbouring state of Karnataka turning out to be highly conducive. According to the latest trade reports, Jailer has grossed over Rs. 60 crores in Karnataka alone to become the first-ever Tamil film to reach this mark in the state.
While it can't be denied that Rajinikanth, who was born and raised in Bengaluru, enjoys a huge fan following in Karnataka, the involvement of local superstar Shiva Rajkumar, too, has surely aided the success of Jailer. Shivanna makes a special appearance in the film as Narasimha, a reformed criminal and friend of Rajini's character Muthuvel, and many have expressed that his dynamic entry is one of the highlights of the experience.
Jailer also features cameos of popular actors such as Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Tamannaah, Naga Babu and a few others.
Produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Group, Jailer follows Rajinikanth's 'Tiger' Muthuvel 'Muthu' Pandian, a retired jailer of the Tihar prison who is known for his harsh but incredibly effective ways to reform hardened criminals. The story, written by Nelson himself, follows Muthuvel's pursuits of overcoming Varman, the dreaded idol smuggler played by Vinayakan.
