Superstar Rajinikanth's latest movie Jailer has taken cinemas across the world by storm. Despite growing predictions about Rajinikanth's diminishing potential to draw audiences to theatres in light of the poor performances of his last two movies, Jailer has set the box office on fire, by collecting more than Rs 400 crore in ticket sales.
While director Nelson has crafted a perfect movie that will appeal to the core fan base of Rajinikanth, the movie's hero-worshipping content has also found wider acceptance among all movie-going audiences. Despite several criticisms about the narrative drawbacks, one cannot deny the fact that Jailer is a highly-enjoyable no-brain entertainer.
Fans are celebrating Jailer with such vigour that wasn't seen in recent times for any other big star. All the craze and celebration make Jailer a movie that must be experienced in packed houses to get the full bang for the buck. And if you are an avid streamer, waiting to see Jailer in the comfort of your home, then you might have to wait longer.
Judging from the movie's ongoing reception, Sun Pictures is unlikely to make the movie available for streaming anytime soon. Usually, the streaming rights are sold way before a movie's theatrical release. The producers would have entertained an agreement with their streaming partner, specifying a certain timeframe for the digital release. Recent industry norms have seen new films arrive on digital platforms four to five weeks post-theatrical release. Take, for example, Malayalam cinema's biggest blockbuster 2018 . Despite its immense popularity and global success, the film's box office potential was cut short due to a premature digital release , dictated by contractual obligations.
It seems Sun Pictures have planned to avoid such mistakes by not finalising the streaming partner for Jailer. While many have speculated that Netflix is the film's OTT partner, based on previous collaborations between Sun Group and Netflix, a reliable source close to the film's production confirmed that the digital partner for Jailer remains undecided. "Mostly by the end of this week we will come to know," the source added while rubbishing the rumours about Netflix bagging the movie's streaming rights.
