Sujoy finally found his "Maya D'Souza" thanks to Kareena's undying enthusiasm for Jaane Jaan. It was a remarkable coincidence that led to the actor getting cast in the film, and when the filmmaker was asked about it, he stated that it felt like the universe was at work. When he first acquired the film's rights, he kept the news to himself. Kareena contacted Sujoy at that same moment to express her interest in participating in a film of this nature. After keeping this script for 11 years, casting her in the role of Maya felt like a natural choice for the director. He continued by saying that her enthusiasm for the tale and her desire to perform it truthfully enhance it.

Sujoy had finally captured his hero, and now he had to go on the quest for Naren (Jaideep) and Karan (Vijay). The Kahaani helmer had no idea that the hand of fate had brought together two actors who had been close friends since they were in college together. Sujoy said that it's crucial for him to be able to identify with every actor in every part, and they hit it off instantly with Naren and Karan thanks to Jaidep and Vijay.
