Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer is one of the most-awaited projects in Tamil cinema. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, is gearing up to hit screens on August 10. But what's interesting is that Dhyan Sreenivasan's upcoming Malayalam film, which is incidentally titled Jailer as well, will drop in theatres on the same date. The Malayalam film is directed by Sakkir Madathil.
And the similarities don't end there! Rajinikanth's plays jailer Muthuvel Pandian in the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial. His character goes on to defy the plan of a bunch of gangsters who are all set to rescue their leader from the prison. The team had dropped his look from the film on the occasion of his birthday last year, which set the internet on fire.
Interestingly, Dhyan Sreenivasan, too, plays a jailer in the Malayalam film, which is set in the 1950s. He is entrusted with the task to bring back a bunch of convicts who have escaped the prison.
Social media is abuzz with memes of two films of the same title clashing at the box office on the same day.
Director Sakkir claimed that he was the first to register the title in the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce in 2021, before the Rajinikanth film and is said to have requested Sun Pictures (the producers of the Tamil film) to release Jailer with a different title. However, Sun Pictures has gone ahead with their plan to release the film with the same title. We hear that both films are pursuing a legal battle with respect to their titles.
Rajinikanth's film has an ensemble cast which comprises Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal, Sunil, Jackie Shroff, Tamanaah, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Vinayakan to name a few. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander, marking his third film with the Superstar after Petta and Darbar. The star cast of the Malayalam film comprises Manoj K Jayan, Navas Vallikkunnu, Divya Pillai, Unni Raja, Binu Adimali, and Sreejith Ravi.
