Varun Tej-starrer Matka, directed by Karun Kum ar, is inspired by real-life events! Yes, you read it right. According to the latest Telugu reports, the film is based on the real-life betting pioneer Ratan Khetri. Khetri was known for turning 'Matka' (a type of gambling that emerged in Mumbai in 1962) into India's most popular betting game and developing a nationwide gambling network that lasted decades under his control.
According to reports, Varun Tej will be essaying the role of the gambling king and the story has been fictionalised for commercial aspects.
Khetri, who originally hailed from Karachi, Pakistan, came to Mumbai as a teenager and later gained popularity for transforming betting business in the country. Khetri pioneered in using lots with numbers that were placed in earthen pots (from which the term Matka comes from). Winners were declared through a random drawing of lots from the pots. The business reached its peak in the 80s, however, Khetri also faced jail time during the emergency period. The ‘Matka King’ breathed his last in 2020 after battling a prolonged illness.
Since the film is now touted to be a biopic, the Operation Valentine actor is set to undergo a massive makeover to step into his character.
A close source from the sets revealed that Varun likes to ‘reinvent himself and present himself in new ways’ to audiences. “When he heard the story of Ratan Khetri and his betting activities, he felt there was a scope for drama that could be brought to screen. It’s a new role for him, and he loved the way his character has been designed,” the source revealed.
The actor, who has finished shooting a couple of schedules for the film, is set to sport different costumes in the film.
