The recent Malayalam investigative drama Kannur Squad became one of the most commercially successful movies in Superstar Mammootty's sprawling career. And it's only natural that people will wonder about the potential of turning it into a franchise, considering its strong recall value.
Amid a lot of speculations, director Roby Varghese Raj broke the silence on the possibility of making a follow-up film. In a recent interview, Roby confirmed that the plans for Kannur Squad 2 are in the pipeline, but he has not made the preparations yet. He also didn't share a tentative timeline as to when we can expect an announcement. It's also not clear whether Kannur Squad 2 will be his immediate next film or if he will come back to it after working on another film.
At this moment, we can also take joy in the comfort that we will get to see once again Mammootty leading a top police squad, chasing the most elusive criminals across the country.
In addition to playing the lead role, Mammootty also bankrolled Kannur Squad under his own banner Mammootty Kampany. His relatively new production banner is fast gaining a reputation for churning out modern-day classics. All of the four films so far that were bankrolled by Mammootty Kampany managed to earn significant commercial and critical acclaim.
Kannur Squad was no diffrienet. The film opened in cinemas on September 28 to positive reviews and soon became a top choice for the fans of Malayalam cinema worldwide.
Despite facing tough competition from other bigger films, including Thalapathy Vijay's Leo, Kannur Squad held its own at the box office and became one of the top 10 highest-grossing films in the history of Malayalam cinema with more than Rs 100 crore in worldwide ticket sales.
Kannur Squad is now streaming on Disney+Hotstar.
